Sabin Center Executive Director Honored for Excellence in Public Service

On April 15, the American Society for Public Administration (ASPA) honored Executive Director Dr. Stan Meiburg with the John W. Gaston Award. In selecting Dr. Meiburg, the ASPA recognized his “longstanding leadership and commitment to the protection and strengthening of our natural resources and public health.”

Beyond his 39 years with the Environmental Protection Agency, Dr. Meiburg has contributed at state and local government levels of government. Further, he continues to make an impact through his leadership at the Sabin Center, teaching and mentoring Wake Forest students, and dedicated service to his community. 

Public service is about commitment to others. Those dedicated to the public good invest countless hours making their communities and the world around them a better place to live, work and thrive.

The ASPA noted that Dr. Meiburg’s lifelong commitment to forging multi-sector partnerships for the public good mirrors ASPA’s own mission of bridging and bringing together practitioner and academic communities toward the collective goal of advancing excellence in public service.

In accepting the award, Dr. Meiburg observed that it represents the work of many distinguished colleagues over a long career. Moreover, he noted, it underscores the importance of developing a new generation of public sector leaders. The Gaston Award was presented to Dr. Meiburg as part of the 2024 ASPA Annual Conference, “Building Resilient Communities.”
