An Evening with Gina McCarthy and Janet McCabe

On March 25, 2025. the Sabin Center hosted two leading lights of modern environmental protection: former EPA Administrator and White House National Climate Advisor Gina McCarthy and former Deputy Administrator Janet McCabe. Throughout the day, both Gina and Janet met with students, faculty, and staff in intimate Q&A sessions covering a breadth of topics.

In the evening, over 350 citizens, faculty, students, and staff joined us in Broyhill Auditorium for a rousing keynote and thoughtful discussion. Gina electrified the audience with her energy, wisdom, and wit, providing a much needed jolt of inspiration for many in the crowd.

Both speakers were amazing. Their energy and words gave me hope and joy!

Gina then joined her dear friend and colleague, Janet McCabe, for a discussion moderated by Sabin Center Executive Director, and former Acting Deputy Administrator, Stan Meiburg.

Close friends and former colleagues Janet McCabe, Stan Meiburg, and Gina McCarthy enjoyed a lively and candid conversation.

The three of them shared insights, observations, and lessons learned from their lifetime of public service, fielding tough but essential questions about advancing environmental protections despite the current rollback of federal oversight. Although there’s no silver bullet for the challenges we’re facing, Gina implored us all to stay in the fight:

Don’t panic. Buckle up!
