Hybrid conference will be hosted on campus and online
On April 29 and April 30, The Sabin Center, along with its partners at MIT’s Abdul Latif Jameel Water and Food Systems Lab) and the White Nile and Sudd Centre, will host a hybrid in-person and online global event exploring the dynamics of the Sudd Wetland.
Sitting in South Sudan in the basin of the White Nile, a healthy Sudd is essential to those who call it home as well as to our planetary wellbeing.

Wednesday evening’s programming will be held at Wake’s Porter Byrum Welcome Center. We’ll host a public reception at 5:30pm followed by a discussion between Wake Law’s Prof. John Knox and Sabin Center Fellow Deng Majok Chol at 6:30pm. Chol, a South Sudanese researcher working toward a PhD with Oxford University from right here in North Carolina, brings unique perspective into the social, cultural, and geopolitical dynamics unfolding on the ground. Prof. Knox is a leading human rights expert who charted the path forward for the role of human rights in conservation.
On Thursday, we’ll host a series of plenaries and panel discussions exploring the current status of infrastructure, wildlife, protected areas, land cover and use, community resilience, and the impacts of climate change on Africa’s largest wetland as we work to advance our collective understanding of this critical region and build partnerships toward a more sustainable future for the region and its people. Thursday’s programming will be held online, and will include speakers based in Juba, South Sudan.
We hope you will join us for this programming on Wednesday, April 29 and Thursday April 30.
All programming is free and open to the public, though registration is required.
